From New Scientist

Astronomers have spotted the most distant object yet confirmed in the universe – a self-destructing star that exploded 13.1 billion light years from Earth. It detonated just 640 million years after the big bang, around the end of the cosmic "dark ages", when the first stars and galaxies were lighting up space.

The largest diamond ever found is the burned out corpse of a star named BPM 37093, about 50 light years away from Earth.

The white dwarf star is a chunk of crystallized carbon that weighs 5 million trillion trillion pounds.

Astronomers say that similarly, our Sun will deplete its nuclear fuel and die in another five billion years. About two billion years after that, the cinder Sun will be a similar diamond.
